Owning a BMW M Car in Washington: Which M Fits, What Winter Demands, and Where to Service It
BMW's US M lineup runs from the 473-hp M2 coupe to the 738-hp XM Label. This guide matches each M model to a real South Sound driver, covers the Washington rules that matter for a performance car, and explains ownership at BMW Northwest on 20th Street East in Tacoma.
The short answer for Washington M buyers
For a single car driven year-round around Tacoma, an xDrive M model is the practical choice: the M3 Competition xDrive, M4 Competition xDrive, M5, X5 M Competition or XM Label, each run on a dedicated winter tire set from November to March. The rear-drive M2 and the manual M3 are best as three-season cars for most owners here, and the best fit for a second car or regular track days. Before buying, check which tire sizes your model accepts chains on, because Washington's mountain passes can require them even on all-wheel drive.
Which BMW M model fits which South Sound driver
Each model is matched to driving around Tacoma, Gig Harbor, Puyallup and Olympia, using BMW's published US figures. The full table is in our BMW M 0-60 and spec matrix.
M2
The smallest M, at 473 hp. Choose rear-drive with a manual for weekend roads like SR-302 out of Gig Harbor, or the new M2 xDrive arriving for the 2027 model year for a car you can drive through a wet November.
M3
Four doors and a usable back seat. The rear-drive manual suits an enthusiast with a second car; the M3 Competition xDrive is the one-car answer for an I-5 commuter from Lakewood or Federal Way.
M4
The two-door version of the M3, from the 503-hp rear-drive M4 Competition Coupe to the 523-hp M4 Competition xDrive. The convertible makes the most of a dry July run up Chinook Pass on SR-410.
M5
A 717-hp plug-in hybrid V8 with xDrive standard. The M5 Touring is sold in the US, which makes it the M for a family that drives to Spokane or Portland with a full cargo area.
X5 M and X6 M Competition
617 hp with xDrive and SUV ground clearance. The pick for a driver heading to Crystal Mountain on winter weekends who still wants M performance on the way home.
XM Label
BMW M's most powerful road car at 738 hp, and the only XM version sold in the US for 2026. It suits a buyer who wants the flagship and a short electric commute in one vehicle.
BMW's M Performance models, such as the M340i, X3 M50 and i5 M60, sit between the standard lineup and full M cars. Browse current BMW M inventory at BMW Northwest, or spec one exactly with Build Your Own BMW.
What changed in the US BMW M lineup for 2026 and 2027
Several M models left the US market in the last year. As of November 2026, this is the lineup a Washington buyer is choosing from.

|---|---|---|
| M8 Coupe, Convertible and Gran Coupe | Production has ended | Shop certified pre-owned or used |
| X3 M and X4 M | No new generation; the X4 ended production in November 2025 | The X3 M50 is now the most powerful X3 |
| M4 CS | Not offered for the 2026 model year | The M4 Competition xDrive is the top M4 on order |
| Z4 M40i | Z4 production ended in 2026 | Remaining cars are run-out or pre-owned |
| M2 xDrive | New for the 2027 model year | The first M2 with all-wheel drive |

Waiting for the electric M3? BMW M has confirmed an all-electric M3 for 2027, built on the Neue Klasse platform, alongside a future gasoline M3. If you want the current twin-turbo inline-six M3 new, the 2027 model year is the window.
Washington winter with a rear-drive or xDrive M car
Washington's winter rules treat drivetrains differently, and that decides whether an M car can stay your daily driver from November to March. The State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) allows studded tires from November 1 through March 31. When a pass posts "chains required, except all-wheel drive," an all-wheel-drive car is exempt only if all wheels are engaged, it wears approved traction tires and it carries chains (WAC 204-24-050). In severe conditions WSDOT can require chains on every vehicle.
| Situation | Rear-drive M (M2, manual M3) | xDrive M (M3 and M4 Competition xDrive, M5, X5 M, XM) |
|---|---|---|
| Snoqualmie or White Pass posts "chains required, except AWD" | Chains must go on | Exempt with all wheels engaged, traction tires fitted and chains carried |
| Commuting on I-5 or SR-16 in a cold, wet week | Fine on winter tires; summer tires lose grip on cold pavement | Fine on winter tires |
| Studded tires | Legal November 1 to March 31 | Legal November 1 to March 31 |
| Practical setup | Summer car plus a dedicated winter wheel and tire set, or a second car | One car year-round with a winter wheel and tire set |
Performance summer tires are not built for near-freezing pavement, so plan a winter wheel set before the first cold snap and check which tire sizes accept chains. Our Pacific Northwest winter BMW driving guide covers pass conditions and tire choices in more depth.

BMW M ownership in Washington: frequently asked questions
Can you drive a rear-wheel-drive BMW M car in a Washington winter?
Yes, on proper winter tires, for most commuting around Tacoma and the South Sound. On a mountain pass posting "chains required, except all-wheel drive," a rear-drive M2 or manual M3 must fit chains, while an xDrive M car is exempt when it is in an all-wheel-drive mode, wears approved traction tires and carries chains.
Are studded tires legal on a BMW M car in Washington?
Studded tires are legal in Washington from November 1 through March 31 on any passenger vehicle. Outside that window they are not allowed, and WSDOT does not grant waivers.
Which BMW M models are no longer sold new in the US?
As of November 2026, the M8, X3 M, X4 M, M4 CS and the Z4 M40i are no longer offered new in the US. The current US M lineup includes the M2, M3, M4, M5, M5 Touring, X5 M and X6 M Competition, and XM Label.
Does a new BMW M include a free M School?
Not automatically. The M Driver's Package is an optional package on a new M purchase; it includes a full-day high-performance driving event at a BMW Performance Center, and its credit can go toward a One-Day M School.
Where can I service a BMW M car near Tacoma?
BMW Northwest in Tacoma services BMW M models, with scheduled maintenance covered by BMW Ultimate Care for 3 years or 36,000 miles and warranty repairs covered for 4 years or 50,000 miles on a new car.
